COOKEVILLE—Even before they graduate high school, area students have an opportunity this summer to earn credits toward their college degree.
Tennessee Bible College in Cookeville is offering a two-week course, July 16-27, especially for rising high school juniors and seniors desiring a head start in higher education.
This summer's course offering is Contemporary Philosophy, and those completing the requirements will earn three credits toward their college degree — credits which may be transferred to another college or university.
We've offered early admission before, but this is the first time we have had a special time in the summer just for an early admission course," said TBC Dean Kerry Duke. "It's a good opportunity for high school juniors and seniors to pick up three hours of credit."
He said it may otherwise be difficult for students to work a college-level class into their schedule.
"So this class is being offered while they're on break. That means they can devote all their time to the college course," Duke said.
Tennessee Bible College students Helen Wang, Mark Day, Chris Thomas and Midea Liao look forward to welcoming high school juniors and seniors to the campus this summer. TBC is offering an early admission course in comtemporary philosophy July 16-27.
"But that's not to say they cannot take early admission courses at the same time they are taking high school courses — because they can. They don't have to wait till next summer to pick up three more hours. If they want, they can enroll in a college-level course in the fall."
In their study of contemporary philosophy at TBC, students will look at Western philosophy from 1850 to present with an emphasis on current issues and questions about morality and God.
"The whole class will be viewed in light of God's word," Duke said.
Class times are 9 a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday, July 16-27. The course fee is $90.
The first week of class coincides with TBC's ninth annual Truth Bible Camp, to be held July 15-18, in which meals and overnight accommodations are available with a $25 registration fee. Camp participation is optional.
Credits earned through the TBC early admission program can be applied toward a bachelor of arts degree in religious education at TBC or transferred to the college or university of the student's choice — including Tennessee Tech University.
"Tennessee Tech has been good to work with us," said TBC President Malcolm Hill.
In addition to the bachelor's degree in religious education, TBC also offers master's and doctorate degrees in theology and a two-year preaching diploma. Distance Learning courses are also available.
Students interested in the TBC early admission program should contact the college well in advance to begin application procedures, which must be completed before registration can take place. The registration deadline is July 13.
Students must additionally provide a copy of their high school transcript, a written recommendation from their high school principal or counselor and a letter of permission from parents or guardians.
More information, including downloadable application forms, can be found on the TBC Web site at www.tn-biblecollege.edu or by calling the college at (931)526-2616.
