David Hill: Your freedom ends where my nose begins. Got a minute? This definition of freedom likely came in part from Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. In our Republic, freedom means within the laws of the land. It has to mean this for freedom to do anything we want, any time, is anarchy. Our founders saw freedom as a divine design of nature’s God, for the crown of His creation, mankind.
When you use freedom maliciously to harm, hurt, destroy, pervert individuals and society, freedom begins to be lost. Freedom in Christ and freedom in the law depend upon individual commitment. If individual integrity is broken down, then all freedom is lost. In this time of celebration of our independence as a nation, remember the price of freedom is paid daily by each citizen’s commitment to goodness, righteousness, and yes, godliness.
God richly blessed this nation and shed his grace on us. Let’s do our part to keep it. Jesus came that all might be free from the law of sin and death (Romans 8:2). That’s good news!
