Those who don’t respect the dead are unlikely to respect the living. On Memorial Day, we owe gratitude to those who came before us—family members who worked hard for our future, and soldiers who died defending our freedoms. Like Abraham who honored his family with a proper burial, we too should show respect. As one veteran said, even during holiday fun, take a moment to remember those who gave so much. Memorial Day is more than just a day off—it’s a reminder that freedom comes at a cost. Let’s not forget the sacrifices that made it possible.

David Hill: I’ve heard it said that those who failed to respect the dead will not respect the living. Hi, got a minute? We all have family members gone on, who worked hard for us so that we might have a better life. They deserve our respect.

Father Abraham of old said a precedent for the people of God when he purchased the Cave of Machpelah (Genesis 23) for a proper burial place for his wife, Sarah, and family. Respect for the dead.

I had the occasion to hear an old veteran of war interviewed on Memorial Day. When asked about Memorial Day—the holiday, vacation time with ball games, lake outings, and the like—the old warrior said, “I don’t think the dead soldiers would be against such, but I do believe they would want you to take just a moment to remember.”

We enjoy the blessings of freedom because of the high price paid by many for it. Amid all your activities, take time to remember—and enjoy your freedom, made possible by the blessings of God and the sacrifice of many.

I’m David Hill.
