Music speaks volumes about who we are. Ralph Vaughan Williams once said that music expresses the soul of a nation, highlighting its deep connection to art, life, and the human spirit. In worship, God calls for vocal music, with the heart as the only instrument (Eph. 5:19). Singing in worship is a profound act of communion with God and a way to teach and inspire one another through song. Andrew Fletcher’s words, “Let me make the songs of a nation, and I care not who makes its laws,” remind us of the transformative power of music—something truly worth reflecting on.

David Hill: You know our music can be very revealing. Got a minute? Ralph Vaughan Williams said: “The art of music above all other arts is the expression of the soul of a nation.” We have music designed into us. Yes, it’s an expression of art, life, and our soul. God expects vocal music in worship to Him and always has. There is only one instrument to be played in worship, and that’s the heart (Ephesians 5:19). When one sings in worship to God, they’re “plucking” and “playing” their spiritual heart, their soul purely communing with God while singing. We teach one another through it (Colossians 3:16). With the Word of Christ dwelling richly in our hearts, engaging mind and spirit, we’re to worship the living God.

As to the power of song, Andrew Fletcher, 18th-century Scottish writer and politician, is often credited with saying this: “Let me make the songs of a nation, and I care not who makes its laws.” It deserves consideration, doesn’t it?
