Sometimes the immediate things of the day seem so sure. Coming out of an election year, the mass media has declared by their action, excitement and reporting where their values are. Politics and government are their focus. Presidents, senators, representatives and judges reported by them as that which is sure. Celebrity, fame, popularity, power and position are pictured as the sure thing. Moral right and wrong is too often determined by who has the power. Without looking it up, a quick answer to the following questions. Are you willing? Quick answers, quiz yourself. Who was the 21st President of the United States? Name the top celebrity of 1933. Can you name your fifth great grandfather on your mother’s side of the family? Who was the richest person in the world in 1956? This little quiz reveals how fleeting the “sure” things of this world are. Presidents go away and are soon forgotten, even family members quickly fade from our memory. The immediate things of this world that seem so sure, are temporary, sometimes very temporary. Worldly things are transient, fleeting and soon forgotten (Ecc. 2:16).
The Psalmist of old said God’s Word is sure, forever settled in Heaven (Psa. 119:89). On earth God allows man to make decisions as to whether to follow Him or not follow Him. Some take the freedom to tamper with the Word of God, and that’s very sad. In Heaven no such liberty is given, God rules and reigns there, and both He and His word are tamper proof. The angels understand who the Lord of Sabaoth is. The word of God is settled whether we like it or not. God’s word is sure, but how does the world in general regard it? Again, note the media as they influence the attitudes of many when they disregard the Bible in favor of celebrity opinion or some judge’s ruling. Does that not strike you as curious, the thing that is sure, often rejected for that we know to be temporary and of no lasting value?
Jesus came to tell us to build our house on the Rock (Matt. 7:24-27). This is not just for little children to sing, it is for adults to live. The house built on worldly sand will not endure, but the house built on the Lord Jesus Christ will provide great blessings now, and greater blessings in eternity. Can you be sure of it? Yes, it’s settled! Investments in Wall Street, or even your local bank can’t begin to match the security of the bank of Heaven (Matt. 6:19-20). So, why aren’t more folks investing? I’ve heard business men and women talk about a “sure thing” investment. There’s not one of those in this world, but there is in Heaven.
It’s incumbent upon us to take inventory of our life from time to time, Paul did (I Cor. 9:26-27). Have you done so lately? What does your investment portfolio look like? Time, talent and gold? Have you invested it in that which will last, or have you given yourself to that which in unsure, temporary and will fade away? God’s word is settled, sure, follow it and live.
