When Paul wrote, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes” (Romans 1:16), he was declaring his confidence in the message of Christ. In a world filled with philosophies, traditions, and human wisdom, Paul knew that the gospel alone possessed the power to save souls. Nearly two thousand years later, that truth remains unchanged.
The gospel is powerful because it originates with God. It is not a message devised by men, but the divine plan of redemption revealed through Jesus Christ. The death, burial, and resurrection of Christ form the heart of the gospel message (1 Corinthians 15:1-4). Through this message, God has provided the means by which sinful mankind can be reconciled to Him.
The gospel has the power to convict. On the Day of Pentecost, Peter preached Christ crucified and risen again, and those who heard were “cut to the heart” (Acts 2:37). The gospel exposes sin, reveals our need for salvation, and calls us to repentance. No political movement, social program, or human invention can accomplish what the gospel does in the heart of an honest seeker.
The gospel also has the power to transform lives. Consider Saul of Tarsus, a fierce persecutor of the church who became the apostle Paul after obeying the Lord. Think of the immoral Corinthians who were washed, sanctified, and justified in the name of Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 6:9-11). Throughout history, men and women have been changed from lives of sin to lives of faithful service through the influence of the gospel.
Furthermore, the gospel has the power to unite people. It breaks down barriers of race, nationality, social status, and background. In Christ, all who obey the gospel become part of one body, the church (Galatians 3:26-28; Ephesians 4:4-6). The gospel creates a family bound together by faith in Christ and obedience to His will.

Finally, the gospel has the power to save. While many today seek salvation through feelings, personal experiences, or human traditions, the New Testament consistently points to the gospel as God’s means of salvation. Those who hear the gospel, believe it, repent of their sins, confess Christ, and are baptized into Him receive the blessings of forgiveness and new life (Mark 16:15-16; Acts 2:38; Romans 6:3-4).
May we never be ashamed of the gospel. Instead, let us cherish it, obey it, defend it, and share it with others. The world desperately needs the message of Christ, for it remains today exactly what it was when Paul first penned these words “the power of God unto salvation.”
