Jesus came to “bear witness unto the truth” (John 18:37) and He said that everyone that is of truth would hear his voice. To this Roman Governor Pilate responded with a question, “What is truth?” Nothing indicates that wicked, worldly Pilate was seeking truth, but his question is a good one. Some considerations come in answer to the question.

The truth is objective and not subjective and you can know it. It is objective because it emanates from the source of all truth—God. Many today whether knowingly or not advocate a subjective truth. The truth is the sum total of God’s word (Psalm 119:160)  A truth that changes with the wind of public opinion is not truth. A claimed truth which may be adjusted to accommodate family members is not the truth. God’s word is Truth and Jesus said you can know it (John 8:32).

The truth is God’s word and the effect of it is life-changing power. That power is sanctification changing the unholy to holy (John 17:17). The meaning of sanctification and holy move very closely together and are synonymous in nature. Both convey the meaning of being set apart from the world in purity.

When Christ came into the world, He was and still is the essence of truth. He was the Word made flesh (John 1:14). He claimed to be “the truth” (John 14:6); in Him was truth and no darkness at all. It could be said in answer to the question; what is truth? Jesus Christ is the truth.

The truth was embodied by Jesus and completely revealed by the Holy Spirit (John 16:13). The word of God which you hold in your hand, when holding the Bible, came from the work of God the Holy Spirit. Revealed in such a way that all may have it, hold it and follow it.

If Jesus said you can know the truth, then why do some who claim Jesus, teach that you can’t? There are those in the denominational world who know well their beliefs cannot be substantiated by the Bible, so they’re willing to call into question God’s Holy Spirit. Is that not sacrilege even moving dangerously close to blasphemy? God has revealed Himself throughout the ages by and through His word, so much so, that He says one who denies is without excuse (Rom. 1:20).

The devil and his accomplices in this world would like to cancel the truth. It’s nothing new, and has been attempted many times before. Jesus said His word would endure forever (Matt. 24:35). Societies may reject it, but God’s word—truth—will endure. It all rests on the veracity of God. Can God be destroyed? If not, then the truth cannot and will not be destroyed.

Do not be discouraged by faithless radicals who are modern day Pilates. Hold to God’s unchanging hand, follow His will—the Truth—and live forever with Him.
