Jesus teaches that our words reveal the state of our hearts—a truth worth considering in light of the noticeable decline in public discourse. Offensive language has become widespread, despite the fact that every word will be judged. The contrast between using harsh language during the week for professional reasons and professing faith on Sunday exposes a moral inconsistency. Scripture calls for speech that reflects the goodness of the heart, and if your words don’t align, it’s time for a serious self-examination.

David Hill: “That which comes out of the mouth reveals the heart,” Jesus said (Matthew 15:18). So what does our speech reveal about us? It seems public speech has greatly degenerated in the last decade. Words not fit for anyone to hear are heard publicly, seemingly without concern. You do realize every word you say will be judged? That’s what Jesus said (Matthew 12:36). Oh, yes. Someone is listening who will pronounce your eternal judgment. Why would a Christian use foul language? “Out of the mouth proceeds blessings and cursings. My brethren, this should not be” (James 3:10). I knew a man who used bad language on his job, but proclaimed his love for Jesus on Sunday. When asked about it, he said what he spoke during the week was necessary for business. Is this your view? If so, it couldn’t be more wrong. The Bible says a Christian speaks from the good treasure of the heart—good words, carefully considered, having value. Oh yes, the mouth does tell the tale. Might be time for a heart check. Thank you for listening to One Gospel Minute. Stay in touch with our podcast on our website and on Apple, Spotify, YouTube, or wherever fine podcasts are distributed.
