“Respect those who enforce the law.” This is a sentence that I have heard before, and perhaps you have as well. Many of you, like myself, were taught to respect those who enforce the law, and we should do so. It is a sad commentary on our society that so many choose to not respect those who enforce the law.
I. Respect Those Who Enforce the Laws of the Land.
In the long ago, God created government as an institution whereby order could prevail. Romans 13:1-4 says, “Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves condemnation. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same: For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.” It is clear from these verses that those who enforce the law, such as those in executive positions in the government and the police, must be obeyed. Now, this is not to suggest that we may obey law that is contrary to the Word, because that is not the case. Those in ruling positions and others who enforce the law, must remember that Proverbs 16:12 says, “It is an abomination to kings to commit wickedness: for the throne is established by righteousness.” Let us give respect to those who enforce the laws of the land.
II. Respect Those Who Enforce the Law of God.
We have all things that pertain unto life and godliness in the Holy Scriptures (II Peter 1:3, II Timothy 3:15-17). The New Law is binding upon us today, and it is by it that we will be judged (John 12:48, James 1:25). Jesus is the Head of the church with the church being built upon the foundation of the Apostles and Prophets with Him being the Chief Cornerstone (Ephesians 2:19-22). In each congregation, Elders are to work to make sure that the flock is fed with sound doctrine and they oversee the sheep of the flock in which they are members. They do not make law, but rather ensure that the Law that the Head has made is followed (Hebrews 13:17, I Peter 5:1-4). Hebrews 13:17 says, “Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.” Preachers, teachers, and all Christians can help in making sure that we care for one another’s spiritual and physical needs (I Corinthians 12:25).
III. Be Ready for the Great Trial
The Great Trial is coming on the Judgment Day. It is at that time that we will be judged with the faithful going to Heaven and those unfaithful being sent to Hell (Matthew 25:46). May we do all within our power to respect those who enforce the law. Respecting them involves also praying for them! Respecting them involves loving them! Let us respect them!
